The legal proceedings involving Jim and John Thomas (original creators of the Predator character and story Hunters) and Disney / 20th Century Studios were originally scheduled to take place this Thursday, May 27th but have now been postponed. Disney and the Thomas brothers are currently engaged in a battle of rights over Predator and with the first Predator film under Disney's ownership now potentially in jeopardy, the suspense is mounting.
The Thomas brothers filed an injunction which could halt any and all production on Disney's Predator movie. Disney's legal team are of course contending the motion in an effort to keep production rolling. The extension pushes the legal hearing from May 27th to June 3rd, which also happens to be 4 days before Predator 5 / Skulls was scheduled to begin filming.
In addition to the injunction hearing, a Case Management Conference has been scheduled for July 15th, whereby the judge and both legal parties will have the opportunity to come to an agreement before the case goes to trial. Will either party be willing to settle their disputes? Difficult to say, but judging from the current slate of updates regarding this case, it doesn't sound like either party have plans of backing down.
Director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) and crew are currently waiting at the ready in Alberta for filming to kick off next month. Amber Midthunder has also been reportedly cast as one of the film's lead roles. We're hopeful a resolution can be found between Disney and the Thomas brothers so production can continue as planned.
