Hey y'all, been a bit since I was last on here and with the Alien Romulus trailer having dropped just a few days ago (worth noting I joined here because of the Covenant trailer) I figured it was high time I came out of hibernation.

So the last time I was on here I was relating concerns I had regarding Romulus and it's unsubstantiated leaks. A year later, more leaks, I'm sorry to report that I am still concerned. Let me explain why and if you don't wish to know anything now Is the time to stop reading.

Potential spoilers below. Don't say I didn't warn you.

So sometime before the Romulus trailer dropped there was a leak from a test screening. Don't worry all impressions seem positive for what it's worth with even Ridley Scott AND James Cameron their stamp of approval. Plot wise a few interesting things came to light though.

So what is a known fact so far is that a bunch of young scrappers board a station Named Romulus. Actually to be specific it's half of the station while the other half is called Remus. The Remus half is said to be more rooted in Ridley Scott's Alien, while Romulus is closer to James Cameron's Aliens in terms of technology. It's on the Romulus half where our xeno outbreak originates from. The origin of the outbreak? Well apparently it's from non other than the Big Chap himself. The very same one from Alien "Kanes son". It seems he's been recovered from deep space and Weyland Yutani has extracted the black goo pathogen from him and reverse engineered it thus creating the facehuggers. Will say for a moment if this is true I'm glad Scott's highly divisive prequels are not being ignored unlike what the Noah Hawley Hulu series might be doing. I don't mind this idea to be honest. While I'm certain when Alien was made they intended for the Alien to be incinerated but what we saw was him simply being blown away. On the other hand I feel it's quite a stretch to find the Big Chap in the first place. After all Ripley drifted through space for 57 years before out of shear luck a salvage crew found her. And why does it have to be the original Alien? Let me counter this with a more plausible idea.

Rumor control. Here are the facts. Romulus officially takes place in 2142, 20 years after Alien in 2122. This means of course Alien Isolation takes place in 2137. At the end of Isolation Amanda Ripley narrowly escaped Sevastopol Station before it was sucked into the gas giant it orbited's atmosphere. So did a few Aliens that got on board the Anesidora. I'm simplifying things a tad but there was even a short animated series based on Isolation released on YouTube that retold Isolations plot using its cutscenes as well new animation. Some of the new animation detailed numerous xenomorph attached to debree from Sevastopol. All either sleeping or hibernating. Normally I wouldn't except a movie to acknowledge a game but since Fedè Alvarez acknowledged Alien Isolation as a major influence on his movie I think it's safe to assume the game is being kept as canon. Since we know obviously know Amanda was rescued, and knowing there's multiple live xenomorph in the same range of space, one possibly still on board the Anesidora itself, I find this more plausible than finding the big chap. Asking for too much? Probably but since Alvarez has said there's numerous nods to other movies, what's to say Isolation won't be acknowledged? And this would be a cool way to really keep the game in canon.

No here is where I'm really concerned. The other notable leak is the presence of a Hyperdyne systems model 120-A/2. Specifically this means a model much like Ash, right down to recreating Ian Holm's likeness via CGI. This is where I wonder why even more so than the Big Chap that if this is really necessary. Are these connections to the original Alien needed? Or just memberberrys? Am I nitpicking too much? After all everything is very positive so far. The trailer reception is very positive, nice change from the mixed responses the Covenant trailers got. Funny enough I loved those trailers. Anyone else feeling the same trepidation that I am?

You think there'll be too much fan-service/ familiarity in a negative sense? I'd personally prefer if the original Alien and all its ambiguity was left alone in the first place considering the complete overhaul Prometheus did with the backstory, adding grand philosophical questions about life and creation and yada yada yada, but it is what it is and this is what we've got.

Sure Aliens expanded upon the mystery surrounding the derelict on LV-426 with a colony and a queen but it was still within the same tone of the first film that it all came down to: a highly dangerous alien species that W-Y wants to exploit no matter what the cost.

While I think it's too early to jump to conclusions about Romulus, I like the idea of bringing (what most likely is) W-Y back and horror aboard a distant, claustrophobic space station as it sort of moves back within the scope of the old Alien films. I also like the idea of bringing the old chap back in this manner, a creepy half-dead xenomorph on an operating table, as it reminds me of The Thing.

With that being said however, my huge concern (thanks to the half-assed final act in Covenant) and even bigger question here is whether the classic concept still effectively works on the big screen. I want to believe it does with the proper execution (tight script, direction and acting)

Alien Isolation still proves to this day that a xenomorph endlessly popping out of vents throughout a 15-20hr repetitive yet masterful game is a horrifying experience, but on the other hand it has the additional horror- and surprise element of your own interactions.

I want to believe Alien Romulus will scare the s*** out us once again, and I'm open to new twists and turns as long as it's tense and remains persistent overall.

All in all, I'm carefully optimistic.

I love Alien Isolation ( I've played through it dozen times ...in VR a couple of times )....But I'm the only one of my friends/family that knows anything about it, their disdain for Prometheus and A:Covenant showed me they have little patience for nuance or having to think.

Family "Who's that?! Why is that happening?! When did that happen??"

Me "Uggh.."

I'm hoping for a jump scare thrill ride....But I'll be happy with just about anything.

Cool visual.

Hello Neomorph. Glad to see you're still haunting these halls as well.

My concern is that after the prequels came in perhaps a little too heavy with their philosophy, Romulus will attempt to play things a little too safe by saddling the movie with too much nostalgia bait. Kind of like Rise of Skywalker. We almost already have a "Somehow Palpatine returned" moment hinted at. Also after stating it's a stand alone movie, Alvarez has turned around and said there's significant ties to pretty much all the movies.

A couple years ago I said Alien needed a back to basics approach in the vein of Halloween 2018. I don't want to regret saying that. I already almost do

Funny, my mom actually liked Prometheus. Especially the Engineers and their Alien God plot

Good to see you as well ninXeno426, hopefully more veterans well return as well as new users. I've done a bit of marketing on another site with a poll and then smoothly/passive-aggressively recommending scified in my sig there.

Regarding Ash I'm not sure if it's a good idea to include him but for the reason that it'll likely be a predictable outcome (i.e evil intentions, yet again) and predictability is never good in a horror film, or at least kept to s minimum.

As for OG Alien turned Frozen Chappie it's a bit of a stretch indeed but I can buy it if they do it in a convincing manner.

Well from what I hear from AVP Galaxy, its not exactly Ash but another android from the same Hyperdyne A series. His name is going to be called Rook

I've heard pretty much the opposite. That they did indeed CGI Ian Holm. I have literally 0 issue with another twitchy A/2... just really don't want to see CGI Ian Holm. I really wish Hollywood and Disney especially would get over that.

I'm thinking things will wake up around here when we have a full trailer. Here's to hoping. Since this isn't a sequel to any other movie and teaser is literally that, a teaser. There's just isn't much to sink into with it right now. I have mixed feelings about the teaser but gotta say they have done well In keeping much of the movie a mystery.

If I had to guess come Alien day we'll get a full trailer

In response to the OP, I think it’s highly plausible that WY could find and extract Big Chap given the last known Nostromo coordinates, scanning technology, etc... the Xenomorph / Black Goo is their primary focus, investing over a Trillion dollars in research for it. You bet they're going to comb every inch of space they can to find their next meal ticket. Ripley on the other hand, was simply a blue collar worker, they had no interest in recovering her whatsoever, they probably saw her pod floating through space and ignored her, assuming it would tie up a loose end.

So for that argument, I'm not overly concerned about the likelihood of finding Big Chap in space.

As for the Hyperdyne Systems Android, I suspect it's either a flashback sequence OR a busted up version found and brought back online in the Romulus station. Perhaps when they do, the Android warns them of the outbreak which occurred or whatever happened to cause the station to be abandoned.

My initial concerns were in response to the younger crew, but after watching the teaser, I don't have such a concern anymore, I'm more optimistic now than I was a year ago, for sure.
